Fall Prevention and Safety

January 30, 2020

Millions of people are treated for fall-related injuries every year. They’re also the third leading cause of injury-related deaths and one of the most common claims received by Amerisure. The good news? Falls are preventable with a few simple precautions.

1. Plan ahead
Make a list of all the safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) necessary for the job. If working outdoors, this includes checking the weather before arriving to the jobsite. Your needs may change based on your working conditions!

2. Do a walk-through of the jobsite
Mark any hazards that can cause falls. For instance, identify uneven surfaces, holes, protruding objects and standing water or chemicals. Make sure the tolls used to mark the hazards are obvious, or block off the area entirely.

3. Keep a firm grip
When working on ladders or scaffolding, ensure you’re tied to the fixture or have a proper hold on the equipment. The equipment should also be leaned against a solid surface or tethered to a secure point.

4. Check on your coworkers
Do regular checks throughout the jobsite to ensure everyone is following proper safety procedures. If someone is working in unsafe conditions, immediately address the issue to avoid a fall.

By following these simple steps, you may avoid falls and the associated costs at your workplace.
