Free Behavioral Assessment Is a Hiring & Training Tool

- Help setting up fleet policies and procedures. “Our loss control consultants, who work locally in the field near policyholders, can sit down with management and assist them in developing policies and procedures” states Kevin Clary, Vice President – Loss Control at Amerisure Insurance. The right policies and procedure can directly impact the seven key factors that influence fleet safety.

Amerisure offers, free of charge to policyholders, the Hogan Behavioral Safety Assessment tool. “It’s an online assessment that a company can give to a potential new employee,” explains Clary.This third-party test “asks specific questions that provide a rating back to the potential hiring manager on how risky this individual could be when operating a commercial vehicle”, explains Clary. The fleet manager can use that information in the hiring process.
He adds that “A fleet manager can then also train based on that information. So if you do hire the person, you would know some of their tendencies. You could possibly customize your training directly to that person.”

- Training for the trainer. Amerisure provides “field teaching” of fleet managers through its commercial auto loss control consultants. Amerisure’s loss control consultants cannot take the role of fleet safety manager. “But our role is to teach fleet managers how and what to teach and provide them the tools to do that through our Train the Trainer program”, believes Clary.“The real thing you’re trying to control — and it’s the hardest thing to do — is the human factor,” says Clary of fleet managers’ influencing their drivers. “That’s where the training is crucial.”
Clary notes that driving is “probably one of the toughest things to train from the standpoint of any safety or loss control person — because everybody does it every day. And everyone thinks they’re good at it.”
“They think that they don’t have to learn it. I like to give the analogy that NFL football players still practice blocking and tackling every day,” points out Clary. “The most dangerous thing any of us will ever do consistently over our lifetime is drive a vehicle. Training experienced drivers is well worth its while for fleet managers.”
