Amerisure-Sponsored Athlete J.J. Spaun Earns Victory in San Antonio, Ticket to Augusta

April 5, 2022

It’s an exciting time for 31-year-old J.J. Spaun, an Amerisure-sponsored golf professional who rallied from a double bogey start in the final round at the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio, Texas, producing birdies and pars thereafter to regain the lead. He dropped to 13 under par and held it, winding up with his first PGA TOUR victory by two shots and an invitation to the Masters this weekend. Fans, followers, and the Amerisure family cheered him on and are ecstatic for Spaun and his hard-fought victory.

This year marks Spaun’s third PGA TOUR season as an Amerisure-sponsored athlete.
“Winning the Valero Texas Open and earning my way into the Masters is a career-defining moment,” said Spaun. “I owe it all to my family, support team and my sponsors like Amerisure, who provide me with the resources to chase my dreams on the PGA TOUR. Thank you for helping to make my dreams a reality!”

A California native, Spaun has had an interesting journey leading to obtaining his pro card and joining the PGA TOUR. He became an avid fan of and participant in golf from a young age, influenced by his mother who played through nearly her entire pregnancy with John, Jr. (J.J.) and his father, also an avid golfer, after whom he is named. Growing up in his South Pasadena neighborhood, he spent a lot of time on his skateboard but decided his true love was golf.

Spaun played varsity golf at San Diego State University, where he earned Conference Player of the Year in 2012. In 2016, he received the Northern Trust Open Exemption, a recognition awarded to top minority golfers who “represent the diversity of golf.” He won the 2016 Web.com News Sentinel Open with 26 under par against runner-up Sam Ryder. In 2015, he succeeded at the Staal Foundation Open as part of the PGA Canada Tour with 18 under par.

“What a great tournament for J.J.,” said Ryan Craig, Amerisure assistant vice president of Marketing. “He’s an outstanding person and athlete and we’re so happy for him, his family and his team. The poise and determination he showed at the Valero was inspiring to watch, and we couldn’t be more proud to see the Amerisure brand right there with him through it all. We can’t wait to see him take on Augusta National at the Masters this week, and we wish him and his team the best of luck!”

The Masters runs April 7-10 in Augusta, Georgia. Spaun also participates in the Rocket Mortgage Classic, a PGA tournament played at the Detroit Golf Club each July, where Amerisure has made a significant investment in the brand experience.
